Why noise barriers

According to the World Health Organization excessive noise seriously harms human health and interferes with people’s daily activities at school, at work, at home and during leisure time. It can disturb sleep, cause cardiovascular and psycho-physiological effects, reduce performance and provoke annoyance responses and changes in social behavior.
A particular difficulty is the fact that locations with high levels of traffic noise also have high levels of air pollution, which is also a cause of many diseases.

Noise barriers (sound barriers, noise walls) are considered the most reasonable noise mitigation measures available. Key benefits of noise barriers include lessened sleep disturbance, improved ability to enjoy outdoor life, reduced speech interference, stress reduction, reduced risk of hearing impairment and a reduction in the elevated blood pressure created by noise (that improves cardiovascular health).

In Australia, the most commonly used noise barriers are reflective noise barriers, made from various materials - plywood, precast concrete, transparent acrylic and steel. On the other hand, European experiences show that absorbent noise barriers have multiple advantages over reflective ones. In highway applications, a reflective noise barrier on one side of the roadway, can result in some sound energy being reflected back across the roadway to receivers on the opposite side. In some instances, reflective noise barriers might be worse solution than not having them at all.  Absorptive noise barriers present a much more effective option. Reflective panels simply bounce sound waves off their surface in different directions while absorbent ones actually absorb the sound waves that hit them, significantly reducing overall noise.
